The sun is shining, the holiday days have been piling up, and you're ready to hit the road on an adventure with the whole family for a few days. Summer is finally here! If you're planning on doing some travelling with your baby this summer, then there are a few practical items you might need to bring with you.
The items listed below come courtesy of Irish baby concept store Bygge Bo, who has compiled a list of five essentials that are just made for travelling with.
The Compact Stroller
Gone are the days of lugging about a monstrous buggy that takes up half of the space in the boot of your car. Investing in a good quality compact stroller will save you lots of space and is always handy to have for those family holiday adventures. Bygge Bo recommends a lightweight and super compact wheel solution like the BABYZEN Yoyo2 or for twins or for adding a sibling, the BABYZEN Connect will turn your YOYO into a double pushchair.
The Baby Carrier
If you really want to cut down on space and want to save yourself from bringing a stroller entirely, a baby carrier will do the trick. Perfect for hands-free walks, and to save you from worrying about the logistics of going on a hike with a stroller, having a carrier handy means you can just strap on your baby and off you go. Depending on your child's age, Bygge Bo suggests either the Babybjorn Carrier Mini, the Babybjorn MoveCarrier, or the Babyjorn One Air.
The Foldable Cot
If you've booked a staycation, this is one essential to bring if you're worried about the quality of sleep your baby will get while away from home. Compact, as well as quick and easy to set up, the products at Bygge Bo also have good quality safety-tested mattresses. The Babybjorn Travel Cot Lite will suit older babies, while the Bugaboo Stardust Travel Cot is perfect for newborns.
The Easy-To-Assemble Highchair
There is nothing more enraging than forgetting to bring your highchair when travelling. Who would have thought that not having one during dinner time could add so much stress? Luckily, Bygge Bo has the ultimate suggestion - the Stokke Clikk Highchair. It can be unassembled in seconds, and you can pack it away in a handy travel bag that is sold separately.
The Essential Car Seat
Finally, it's the item of the trip you definitely cannot leave the house without - the car seat. Making sure you have a safe and comfortable car seat for any long journey with your baby is vital. Rear-facing is the recommended and safest option for children until they are at least two years old, and for stage 1, aged 0 - 15-18 months, Bygge Bo recommends the Cybex Cloud Z and base or the Uppababy Mesa and base.
Happy travelling!
Highchair with a Footrest
We got the Tripp Trapp because it grows with the child and the investment will be worth it over time but read about the importance of a footrest for a child while eating-this should be the guiding factor in your highchair purchase.
Bibs
Long sleeve bibs and silicone bibs [like the Done by Deer Sleeved Weaning Bib]. Yes we double bib and it saves getting her clothes messy.

It's a surreal experience designing a room for someone who does not yet exist. Part of me felt like I should wait to see her and perhaps allow her first newborn quirks to inspire my interior decisions. The other part, the anxiously impatient part of me, wanted to have it all ready for her homecoming. Determined not to let her gender define colours or tones, I wanted to create a warm, neutral space so I scoured the internet for brands that would reflect this sort of relaxed aesthetic. I am a traditionalist at heart - I love the sense of love and heritage in a quilted or knitted blanket - and so brands like Scandiborn, Liewood and Sebra naturally caught my eye. I'm thrilled with the rattan light fitting, an organic cotton crib canopy and an old rocking chair gifted to me. I also made some cherished finds at Irish-owned Bygge Bo, meaning 'to build a nest', dreamed up by Amanda Cunningham Tapsell, which happily stocks and delivers all those irresistible, age-old, rustic-style Danish and Dutch brands from a charming little store in Meath.

Bygge Bo is a baby concept store on Watergate Street, offering exclusive brands, high-quality products, and unique baby gifts, specialising in pushchairs, car seats, nursery furniture and baby essentials across care, play and clothing. It stocks well-known brands such as Stokke, iCandy, Bugaboo, Uppababy, Cybex and Snuz, as well as brands such as Sebra, Cam Cam Copenhagen, Liewood, Little Dutch, and more, many of which Bygge Bo are the exclusive stockists for in Ireland.
Amanda Cunningham-Tapsell explains: “Many of the brands we work with and the products we stock have a focus on sustainability and quality and are made from eco-friendly sustainable materials, manufactured in socially responsible conditions. The baby industry is hugely wasteful, we’re all guilty of buying disposable clothing, plastic toys and generally baby items with a short life span because this is all that is available in shops. Consumers are changing the way they buy and are definitely more environmentally conscious, they want to have the option to make better choices.
“With this in mind, I have selected products that maintain their quality so as they can be reused and repurposed, our furniture grows with the child, our wooden toys last and double up as beautiful kids room décor, our clothes can be passed down through a growing family, this gives parents the security that their investment is something that will last.
Amanda continues: “As a small independent Irish business based in Navan, we understand that our customers are at the absolute core of our success. That’s why at the heart of our mission, is the belief that every customer should receive a personalised, friendly and helpful service. We understand how daunting and often confusing baby shopping can be for first time parents. In-store you can spend time with us in a dedicated personal shopping appointment, where we’ll guide and advise you through your baby shopping process and we’ll provide expert advice on the products that match your individual needs. Our personal shopping gift service is also perfect if you’re looking for a special gift for an expectant family member or friend.
‘Bygge Bo is a one-stop for all your baby shopping needs – we stock everything from cots, changing tables, pushchairs, car seats, baths, bedding, clothing, toys and more. We also offer payment instalment plans to help you break down the costs of your baby shopping.’ Amanda Cunningham-Tapsell is a Navan native who has spent time living in the UK, Cyprus, and most recently Dubai.
“Whilst balancing life as a mother to two little girls aged six and one, and a career in the corporate world, I decided to make a change. I wanted something new and exciting and something that I knew I could be truly passionate about. My journey started before the birth of my second little girl. I searched high and low for something different for her nursery. I was underwhelmed with the very traditional and same old offerings at many of the big baby retailers in Ireland. I then came across a whole world of beautiful and unusual products from across Scandinavia and Europe – the only issue was that none of them were available to shop in Ireland.
“Identifying this gap in the market sparked the idea for a destination baby shop where parents could shop amazing products. From there I spent endless hours researching, sourcing and onboarding the right brands and products for Bygge Bo,” she continues.
“Myself and my husband then went on the hunt for the perfect premises to launch Bygge Bo. I knew I wanted to set up base in Navan as my home town. This is when we came across 42 Watergate Street, growing up I held fond memories of the street where my parents and grandmother shopped in stores like Mohan’s, Lorenzen’s Butchers and of course the predecessor of our premises, Mullens Menswear. There was something very endearing to me having the opportunity to take such an iconic building on the street and breath life back into it. It sat unoccupied for over 10 years and was in need of some much deserved TLC, so along with our local building contractors Laganara Construction we designed and reconstructed the building to what it is today.
“I am very proud of our new place on the street, the sense of support and good wishes from local businesses, friends and family has been amazing. So this is just the start of our Bygge Bo journey and I cannot wait to open our doors on 1st February to invite everyone in. I hope you love Bygge Bo and our products, as much as I have loved bringing it to you all.”
